The Crips, Bloods, People and Folk Nations have many commonly identifiable signs, symbols, clothing items or styles of dress, colors, alphabets and traditions. Each “set” has a varying level of criminal influence in its area of operation. ![]() These names are usually unique, sometimes including the name of the geographic area, neighborhood, street or “turf” in which they live and operate, fror example, the Grape Street Crips (Los Angeles). Localized criminal street gangs that are directly linked with or emulate established criminal street gangs/gang nations more specifically identify themselves by their “set” names. All currently pose a threat to public safety throughout the U.S. Several have entrenched themselves with Mexican drug organizations (MDOs), establishing transnational drug distribution networks. These four gang nations/affiliations have a presence in the U.S., from the East Coast to the West Coast, and abroad. The hundreds of Chicago street gangs and their members, both those incarcerated and on the street, established and aligned themselves with the People and Folk Nations. They evolved into notorious, ultra-violent and criminally successful street gangs, posing a major threat to Los Angeles. The Crips and Bloods started as street fighters defending their neighborhoods, only to become more dominant, organized, defined and identifiable in the late 1960s. They were territorial, causing tension with other neighborhood gangs. These gangs (e.g., African-American, Irish, Italian, Hispanic/ Latino) formed in the neighborhoods they identified with and defended. The initial reason for their formation was to strengthen ethnic and racial solidarity. They continue to have a stronghold over many Chicago neighborhoods.Criminal street gangs in America have been in existence for centuries. The Vice Lords can be found in the Midwest and some Eastern cities. Members also wear Louis Vitton (VL reversed) caps and UNLV Jackets (UNLV - YVNU reversed, Vice Lord Nation United.) The Vice Lords call fellow members "People" and use the term "All is well." Members of the Vice Lords can be seen wearing University of Iowa Pittsburg Steelers Pirates and Penguins attire. Their common hand signs are a single upraised hand with the thumb, index and middle fingers to form a "VL." Also utilized is the upraised hand with all fingers extended and a separation between the middle and ring fingers. ![]() The different factions also utilize specific graffiti to identify themselves individually. The Vice Lords utilize gold, black and red as their colors and the five-pointed star, top hat, martini glass, Playboy bunny, dollar sign and the cane. Each faction has its own distinctive name and leader. These factions now operate throughout the city of Chicago and outlying areas. Since the original formation numerous breakaway factions have formed. Their main area of power remains the West-side of Chicago. They gained recognition as a gang during this time. As "club" members were released, several relocated to the Lawndale area of Chicago. It was originally formed in the late 1950s as a club in the Illinois State Training School for Boys in St. ![]() The Vice Lords are the oldest and second largest black street gang in the Chicago area. ![]()
